  • Funding: £12.5k + RMB125k
  • Duration: up to 12 months
  • Location: University of Cambridge and Tsinghua University

In 2019 Tsinghua University and the University of Cambridge established the Tsinghua - Cambridge Joint Research Initiative Fund, a five-year initiative to strengthen research collaborations between academics in the two institutions. Calls were issued in 2019 (a general call), 2020 (a call to tackle the pandemic) and 2021 (a call to tackle climate change). Over 20 collaborative projects have been funded by the Initiative.

Call for proposals

Both Tsinghua and Cambridge have identified climate change as a research priority and have developed cross-institutional bodies to help address this challenge. A call was issued in 2021 to fund collaborative projects seeking to contribute to addressing challenges relating to the climate emergency and the transition to a zero-carbon future. Six projects have been funded. However, we are aware that there was significant interest in this call and not all interested researchers were able to submit proposals. Therefore, the call is now reopened for a 2nd closing.

Priority will be given to projects that demonstrate a strong collaboration between the two institutions that makes use of complementary expertise and skills between the UK and Chinese partners. Each research proposal must be jointly prepared by PIs from both institutions. Project costs should not exceed £12.5k for the Cambridge partners and RMB125k for the Tsinghua partners for a project duration of not more than 12 months. The application deadline is Friday 29 July, 2022. Please find in the link below details of the call and the application form.
