EngBio Postdoc Fund 2022 - Call Now Open!

The new EngBio Postdoc Fund supports postdocs within the University of Cambridge Synthetic and Engineering Biology community to develop their own interdisciplinary, cross-departmental and cross-school projects. Four awards of £1000 each will be available for projects led by University of Cambridge Early Career Researchers.

What can we fund?

The Postdoc fund can support postdoc-led projects in the following core areas:

  • Piloting of application-driven research projects
  • Cross-sector relationship building
  • Training
  • Development of resources
  • Public engagement

Projects must relate to areas of synthetic and/or engineering biology, including but not limited to:

  • Cellular and molecular biology and genome editing
  • In vitro and cell-free technologies
  • Hardware and instrumentation for biology
  • Software for biology
  • Biodesign and bioart 
  • Responsible and open innovation and policy

What can we offer?

The first round of funding will open for applications on Monday 18th July 2022 and close on Monday 1st August 2022.

Four awards of £1000 each will be available. We can also offer support for idea development, and with administration (room booking, catering etc.).

A brief (2 page) report will be due at the end of the project.

Who is eligible?

The lead applicant must be a postdoctoral research associate, research fellow or other junior member of staff at the University of Cambridge or its affiliated institutions (Babraham Institute, Wellcome Sanger Institute and CUH).

Applications are welcome from both individuals and teams. Team members, partners and collaborators may be students and/or from external organisations.

All applications must be signed off by a senior sponsor who can act as a cost-centre holder. This is usually an established academic or group leader. 

What are the judging criteria?

All applications will be judged on the following criteria:

  • Relevance: to engineering/synthetic biology and the core areas outlined above
  • Interdisciplinarity: projects that bring together researchers from different departments and schools or applications from cross-departmental/cross-school teams
  • Value for money and feasibility: is the proposed project feasible and is the proposed use of funds cost effective?
  • Openness and Responsibility: we will favour projects that support the principles of Open Science, Responsible Research and Innovation and broadening access

Timeline

  • 18th July 2022 Call opens
  • 1st August 2022 Deadline for submissions
  • 20th September 2022 Funds must be committed
  • 9th December 2022 Projects must be completed
  • 23rd December 2022 Report due (2 pages)
