The Advanced Centre for Biochemical Engineering (ACBE) at UCL seeks to appoint a talented scientist or engineer in the area of Synthetic Biology to develop a deeper understanding of biological systems and their design to enhance bioprocess performance or to facilitate the synthesis of novel products.

  • Salary (inclusive of London allowance): £41,844 - £58,337 per annum
Duties and Responsibilities

The Advanced Centre for Biochemical Engineering (ACBE) represents one of the largest bioprocessing groups in the world, with state-of-the-art fermentation and downstream processing facilities, supporting departmental research on chemicals and pharmaceuticals, complex biopharmaceuticals such as therapeutic proteins, vaccines and cell engineering to enhance production and downstream processing. 

The Centre seeks to appoint a talented scientist or engineer in the area of Synthetic Biology to develop a deeper understanding of biological systems and their design to enhance bioprocess performance or to facilitate the synthesis of novel products. The successful candidate will complement existing strengths by brining expertise in areas such as ‘omics’ technologies, metagenomics, advanced protein/ pathway/ cell engineering or the rational/ quantitative design and optimisation of biological systems. Targets include the microbial and enzymatic synthesis of selective small molecule medicines and chiral pharmaceutical intermediates as well as complex biopharmaceuticals including proteins and gene therapies. 

The successful candidate will be required to carry out research, teaching, enabling and knowledge transfer activities within the Department of Biochemical Engineering, responsibilities which are described fully in the job description.

Key Requirements

The successful candidate will hold a PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant subject including but not limited to biochemistry, molecular biology, biotechnology, chemistry or biochemical engineering. They will have proven communication skills and an increasing track record in high quality publications and conference publications. A proven record of conducting high quality research (related to the genetic modification of metabolic pathways and enzymes in either microbial or mammalian systems) is essential as is the ability to work collaboratively and to share in organising and managing complex programmes. A commitment to high quality academic research and teaching and continuous professional development is also essential. 

To be considered for appointment at Senior Lecturer level, candidates will show evidence of successfully competing for research grant funding and PhD supervision, together with a level of publications output compatible with the next REF exercise.
