Engineering Biology in Cambridge

Café Synthetique is the monthly meetup for the Cambridge synthetic and engineering biology community with informal talks, discussion and pub snacks. Kindly sponsored by Cambridge Consultants.

We meet monthly at the Panton Arms to share the latest developments in engineering biology and related approaches and techniques. Speakers range from students and group leaders to industry professionals and entrepreneurs. We are always open to speaker suggestions so if you would like to nominate yourself or another person, please get in touch via coordinator@engbio.cam.ac.uk.

Monday 6 November. Daniela Lobo, Senior Scientist, Cambridge Display Technology Ltd.

Title: A chemical industry perspective on engineering biology

‘’CDT is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sumitomo Chemical Co. (SCC), a major chemical company with headquarters in Japan. The Corporate Venturing and Innovation team at CDT works closely with SCC’s business units, and actively scouts for new technologies that will help solve the challenges of society through the creation of partnerships with start-ups and academia.

We are leveraging engineering biology as a tool to support SCC’s global efforts toward carbon neutrality, namely through cell-based and cell-free technologies for more sustainable chemical synthesis. The innovation landscape in biomanufacturing has blossomed, with companies developing enabling technologies to reduce cost and broaden the scope of industrial application of these systems. To explore the applicability of some these platforms, our Corporate Venturing and Innovation team has been investing in collaborative proof-of-concept projects with start-ups.’’

Brief bio: Daniela has a MSc in Pharmaceuticals Sciences from University of Coimbra and completed her PhD in 2017 as a Marie Sklodowska-Curie fellow at University of Warwick. She currently works at CDT, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sumitomo Chemical Company, as part of the Corporate Venturing and Innovation team. She leads the UK team’s Life Science activities, namely in the EngBio space, where she scouts and manages projects with start-ups.
