Engineering Biology in Cambridge

Café Synthetique is the monthly meetup for the Cambridge synthetic biology community with informal talks, discussion and pub snacks.

  1. Cheap engineering for biology: Matt Wayland and Jim Haseloff.
An introduction to the Biomaker Africa initiative and how low-cost commodity electronics, optics, mechanics and visual programming can be used for cross-disciplinary training and research across Africa and Cambridge. (Above - Biomaker workshop in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia) (https://www.biomaker.org).
Matt will describe his work to adapt new, highly sophisticated electronic devices for use by non-programmers in low-resource settings.

  2. Open-Seneca - creating a global air quality sensor network with the help of citizen science: Lorena Da +
Open-seneca enables people to build sensors, measure personal air pollution exposure and look at their own data. Our goals are to raise awareness, initiate a behavioural change and transfer knowledge of how to build open-source sensor hardware. (https://open-seneca.org)
We design mobile low-cost sensors collaboratively to fit local needs. We use affordable, off-the-shelf particulate matter sensors, geo location and wireless transmission modules for our devices. The collected data is displayed on dynamic maps on our online platform for identification of pollution hotspots. The sensor design is co-creation-based and tailored to local requirements to achieve a globally compatible and locally appropriate sensor.
