The Kavli Centre for Ethics, Science, and the Public (KCSEP) are looking for researchers to join the latest iteration of 'The Hopes and Fears Lab'. The Lab invites publics and researchers to connect over something we're all experts in — how we feel about the future of science and technology. It all takes place in a cardboard lab designed by artist Tom McLean.
What is the Hopes and Fears Lab?
The very first Hopes and Fears Lab took place at the Cambridge University Alumni Festival in September 2022. Now, three years and hundreds of people later, they're going back to the Alumni Festival for their biggest Lab yet.
The Hopes and Fears Lab is a conversation experiment. It is designed to be a place where everyone, whatever their background, can meet as equals and talk about the implications of cutting-edge science on the future we all share. It’s cheerful and playful and open. There’s no test at the end, no experts, and no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ answers. Just a lot of great questions, and careful listening. With a bit of luck, sitting down in The Hopes and Fears Lab might even help us move our assumptions about science, scientists, ‘the public’, and our future to a new place, together.

How can I take part?
KCSEP are recruiting 15-20 discovery scientists to talk to University of Cambridge Alumni and their families about their Hopes and Fears on Sunday 28th September, 10am - 1pm. They'll be providing researchers with £50 vouchers as renumeration for their time — alongside the opportunity to have some really fantastic conversations! In the past, they've found researchers have come back time and time again, and have really enjoyed the experience. Please complete the (very short!) form below to register your interest.
