Engineering Biology in Cambridge

Café Synthetique is the monthly meetup for the Cambridge synthetic biology community with informal talks, discussion and pub snacks.

DESIGNING FOR THE BIOCENTURY
Carole Colett (Prof in Design for Sustainable Futures, Central Saint Martins Director of Sustainable Innovation, Director of Design & Living Systems Lab)

In her research, Collet questions the emerging role of the designer when working with biological systems. She has also established an original framework for sustainable biodesign, which was first published with the inaugural curation of ‘Alive, New Design Frontiers’ in 2013. Her work has been featured in international exhibitions and she regularly contributes to conferences on the subjects of biodesign, biomimicry and sustainable futures. Her design research project Biolace has been exhibited around the world in 30 international shows including the Universal Expo in 2015 and has been widely cited in book publications and catalogues. One of Collet’s characteristics is that she takes on different research roles, from designer, to curator and educator. This enables her to develop an informed critique of both the design outputs and the design contexts, from making knowledge to framing knowledge.

Carole’s work has been featured in international exhibitions such as the V&A and the Pompidou Centre. She regularly contributes to conferences on the subject of textile futures, biodesign, biomimicry, synthetic biology, future manufacturing and bio-materiality, sustainable design, design for the bioeconomy and climate change. http://www.carolecollet.com/

GROW LAB: A new space for art, science, design, and conversation
Shem Johnson (Specialist technician - Grow Lab, Central Saint Martins)

The Grow Lab is an up-and-coming biology lab where students and researchers will combine the maker space culture of Central Saint Martins to demonstrate and work with living systems, play with microscopy, and learn scientific techniques for biodesign, bioart, and other avenues.

[IR]REVERENT
Drew Baker (Department of Chemical Engineering & Biotechnology)

For centuries, the great monotheistic religions, such as Catholicism proliferated stories about autonomous human mastery over all other organisms. Touting that man was made in god’s image has blinded us to the fact that we are indeed interconnected to nature and that our histories have been influenced by non-human species. [ir]reverent: Miracles on Demand is an artwork that examines the impact of invisible microbial agents on the course of human history and belief systems.
