Research

About a tenth of the human genome comes from viruses - human endogenous retroviruses (HERVs) make up 8% of our genome – and for a long time this part of the genome was considered inactive. HERVs have shaped our evolution and ucovering their roles emerges as a key priority in human health research. I explore the host-virus interface in this exciting new era of resolution revolution in electron cryomicroscopy, high-throughput X-ray crystallography and great advances in artificial intelligence tools in 3D structure prediction.
