Biography

Professor of Analytical Biotechnology. Formerly member of the Institute of Biotechnology, established in 1988, as a centre of excellence in biotechnology to engage in fundamental innovative research and take outcomes through to exploitation when appropriate. Became Deputy Head (Research) (2010-2018) of the newly merged Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology (CEB) and Head of Department 2018-2020. Co-Founder of Cam-bridge-Sens (http://www.sensors.cam.ac.uk/)

Research

Focussed on understanding how biology can be interfaced with electronic systems, linking transduction technologies with synthetic biology, nanomaterials and molecular affinity structures in measurement systems for diagnostics. The group has a reputation for its lead in fundamental innovative research, especially in biosensors, directed in an applied and translational environment, seeding start-ups and collaborative development, towards medical, environmental and industrial biotechnology. Creating the tools to enable affordable diagnostics in low and middle income countries through developing local manufacture of raw materials for in vitro diagnostics, IVDs. Working with collaborators in Asia and Africa to enable clinical use of IVDs.
